How to Promote Healthy Hydration Habits at Work for Corporate Wellness

by Hanson Medical Systems

What Does it Mean to Practice Good Hydration?

In order for our bodies to function properly, we need to stay hydrated. That means we need a lot of water. Water helps regulate our body temperature and balances all of the body’s systems, including the brain, heart, and muscles. Water also makes you feel better physically, can help you lose weight, and even prevent diseases.

The Importance of Staying Hydrated

If you are outside in the hot sun exercising, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, it is crucial to drink plenty of water as your body requires it. Diabetes and heart disease are also conditions that require you to drink more water as they put you at a higher risk of becoming dehydrated. When you are dehydrated, you may feel lightheaded, muscle cramps, dizzy, tired, have a headache, and even feel confused. Dehydration means that your body does not have enough water to operate properly. Not having enough water in your body can also lead to life-threatening illnesses.

How Do You Stay Hydrated?

The best way to stay hydrated is by drinking the recommended amount of water, which is about 6-8 glasses a day. Pregnant women need more than 8 glasses. You can also consume fruits, vegetables, and certain soup broths to stay hydrated. Sports drinks contain many carbohydrates and electrolytes while also helping keep you hydrated, especially if it’s hot outside and you are very active. On the other hand, highly caffeinated drinks are not good for staying hydrated. In fact, it is best to limit the intake of caffeinated drinks as they can contribute to dehydration.

A simple way to stay hydrated at work is to carry a large water bottle with you all day. It’s easy to drink water when you think of it and refill your bottle on breaks. If the taste of water is boring to you, add a lemon or lime, or include a sugar-free drink mix flavor to add to your water. Nowadays you can find zero calorie water in just about any flavor. Many employers provide water coolers or drinking fountains so water is easily accessible.

Another tip for staying hydrated at work is if you are feeling hungry, try having a glass of water first. Sometimes we mistake thirst for hunger and choose a less healthy option to satisfy us. Drinking extra glasses of water also helps us digest meals better and promotes healthy meal plans.

Promoting Healthy Hydration in the Workplace

It is crucial for employees to stay hydrated at work. People are able to perform better when they are hydrated properly. When employees work well, this leads to an overall positive work environment.

Employers should participate in corporate wellness programs to promote healthy hydration habits at work, as well as other healthy practices. Health fairs or on-site healthcare consulting can be great resources for employees, especially for the people who need more education on medical topics. At health fairs, medical professionals can set up a booth, show a presentation, and hand out information about the importance of staying hydrated. Employees should also be able to visit the on-site clinic for one-on-one discussions about proper hydration, as well as poc testing and health and wellness programs.
